Press Release:
Join us on Friday, February 6, 2015, 7pm to 10pm at Artisan Inn DeLand for a fun and informative discussion presented by University of Pennsylvania Bio-molecular Archaeologist, Dr. Patrick McGovern – Uncorking the Past: The Quest for Wine, Beer, and Extreme Fermented Beverages. McGovern is known for his work on the Ancient Ale Series brewed by Dogfish Head.
Fermented beverages have probably been with the human race from its beginning in Africa. McGovern will describe how enterprising our ancestors were in concocting a host of beverages from a vast array of natural products (honey, grape, barley, rice, sorghum, chocolate, etc.) as humans spread around the planet, which had profound effects on our cultural and biological development. Some of these beverages, including the earliest alcoholic beverage from China (Chateau Jiahu), the mixed drink served at the “King Midas funerary feast (Midas Touch), and the chocolate beverage (Theobroma), have been re-created by Dogfish Head Brewery, shedding light on how our ancestors made them and providing a taste sensation and a means for us to travel back in time.
Attendees will have the opportunity to sample several of the Ancient Ales that have been recreated with the help of Dr. McGovern and his team. The presentation and tasting will be followed by a book signing.
General admission tickets are $25 and include a mini tapas pairing with four Dogfish Head Ancient Ales. A Discounted, non-drinking, student ticket is available for $15. Tickets can be purchased at: http://www.volusiabeerweek.com/.
