Southern Brewing celebrates International Beer Day with new brews

Press Release:

Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) has brewed three beer styles from countries around the world in celebration of International Beer Day on August 1, 2014.

“Beer styles vary so widely across the world and it’s important for us to recognize how different they are while still all contributing to the craft beer culture,” stated Brew Master Brian Fenstermacher. “A great way for us to celebrate craft beer from different nations is to brew styles from different countries and make sure that we help expose those styles to our local scene. What better day for us to do that than on a holiday dedicated to just that?” The brewery chose to brew an English Mild, an Australian Pale Ale, and an Irish Stout for the event.

This is the first time that Southern has brewed and released an English Mild. Similar to Brown Ales, English Milds are refreshing session beers that are lighter and less hoppy than American Brown Ales.

Australian Pale ale is another style that Southern has not previously attempted to brew. “We thought Australian Pale Ale would be a fun beer to brew for the occasion, because it’s a style rarely seen in the country, let alone Tampa,” stated Fenstermacher. The style is defined by the focus on bittering hops without late hop additions, as well as a more malty profile than an American Pale Ale.

Fenstermacher also chose to bring back the Irish Stout recipe that was brewed for Southern’s St Patrick’s Day Celebration this year. “It was the first beer we’d put on nitro in the taproom,” stated Fenstermacher. “It went over really well, and was a customer favorite, so we are happy to bring it back for International Beer Day.”

The three international styles, brewed on July 11, will be released exclusively in the Southern taproom on Friday, August 1. All three beers will be available by the glass and in growler fills.
