Cask & Larder announces second collaboration with Bach Festival Society

Press Release: For the second consecutive year, Cask & Larder and the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park will collaborate on a limited edition beer release to commemorate famed 18th century German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, a noted beer lover. The 2016 Branderburger Bock will debut during a special beer release party at Cask & Larder on Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will also feature a live performance by members of the acclaimed Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra, who will serenade the audience with selections from Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

The 2016 Branderburger Bock, brewed by Cask & Larder head brewer Larry Foor, will be produced in a style that mimics the methods of brewing in Germany during the 18th century to ensure the beer is similar to the ones with which Bach was so smitten. In addition to unveiling his newest beer, Foor has invited several other local breweries, including Redlight Redlight, ten10, Central 28, Crooked Can and Red Cypress to also pay homage to Bach. Each brewery will showcase its own German-style beer during the event.

“It’s great to partner with the Bach Festival Society again to release a new edition of the Branderburger Bock,” said Foor. “The turnout last year was unbelievable and it’s amazing to see this grow into an annual affair and have the opportunity to include other local breweries.”

The harmonious collaboration between Cask & Larder and The Bach Festival Society came to be after Betsy Gwinn and Alex Tiedtke, of the Bach Festival Society, discovered a 300-year old letter Johann Sebastian Bach wrote to a friend proclaiming his love for a barrel of beer he had received as a gift. Gwinn and Tiedtke approached Cask & Larder head brewer Larry Foor about brewing a beer in a style similar to the one Bach wrote about to celebrate the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park’s 80th anniversary. Now approaching its 81st Annual Winter Park Bach Festival, from Feb. 12-28, 2016, the Winter Park ensemble is the third oldest Bach Festival Society in the United States.

“We’re thrilled to kick off the 81st Winter Park Bach Festival with this fun event. J.S. Bach was a frequent visitor to coffeehouses and loved his beer and wine so I am sure he wouldn’t mind having his secular works performed outside the concert hall in a far more casual setting. After all he did.” said Dr. John Sinclair, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Bach Festival Society.

The Brandenburger Bock release party will also feature a special German food menu to pair with the beer. The limited edition beer will be available on tap until it runs out and also will be sold in 32-ounce to-go crowlers for $7 per can at both Cask & Larder and Swine & Sons. Cask & Larder will donate $1 from each Brandenburger Bock sold to the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park.

Brandenburger Bock celebrates Bach’s love of beer and music

Press Release:

Johan Sebastian Bach appreciated a good beer. Some might even argue that the 18-century composer had pretty good taste in music, too.

Betsy Gwinn and Alex Tiedtke, of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, recently learned of a 300-year-old letter Bach wrote to a friend proclaiming his love for a barrel of beer he had received as a gift. So, to help celebrate the festival’s 80th anniversary, Gwinn and Tiedtke, approached Cask & Larder head brewers Larry Foor and Garrett Ward to see if they could brew a beer similar to the one with which Bach was so smitten.
The happy result: Brandenburger Bock, a unique and harmonious collaboration that pays homage to the master composer and beer lover.

Cask & Larder will tap the special brew at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. But it gets even better: Members of the Bach Festival Choir will be on hand to serenade the crowd with traditional German beer hall songs. The party is scheduled to last until 6 p.m. and will feature happy hour prices on the special release.

The Brandenburger Bock release party will also feature a special German-themed food menu to pair with the beer. The limited edition beer will be available on tap at Cask & Larder until it runs out and also will be sold in 32-ounce to-go crowlers for $7 per can.

Two big pieces of Cask & Larder news

Two pieces of news from Winter Park’s Cask & Larder:

James and Julie Petrakis, chefs/owners at Central Florida’s award-winning Cask & Larder and Ravenous Pig, have appointed Garrett Ward and Larry Foor to lead brewing efforts at Cask & Larder’s acclaimed Brewery. Ward and Foor will continue to produce many of The Brewery’s popular beers, introduce new limited edition beers and collaborate with Cask & Larder’s chefs to further incorporate fresh, local ingredients into their microbrews.

Both Foor and Ward have deep Swine Family roots, having held various positions at Cask & Larder and Ravenous Pig. Foor, who has been part of the restaurant group since Ravenous Pig launched more than seven years ago, most recently was the bar manager at Cask & Larder, a role he also held at Ravenous Pig. Ward, now head brewer, had been an assistant brewer at Cask & Larder for the past year and has also worked behind the bar at Ravenous Pig during his tenure.

The duo boasts more than a decade of combined beer making experience and holds notable industry distinctions. Ward is a certified cicerone, one of the highest certifications a brewer can receive, while Foor recently earned a degree in brewing technology from the prestigious Siebel Institute in Chicago.

“Garrett and I are really excited to continue brewing the same great beer that Cask & Larder has been known for over the past two years,” said Foor. “ We also plan on working even closer with the kitchen to incorporate some of the same seasonally fresh ingredients in our beers as they are using in the food, placing a stronger emphasis on pairing the two.”

Ward added, “Not only will we continue brewing some of the most popular Cask & Larder beers, we also will introduce new ones, including the Big Belgian Holiday Spiced Quad, which will be ready for consumption very soon.”

In addition to the new beer varietals, Cask & Larder’s Brewery will launch Central Florida’s first to-go crowlers (canned versions of beer growlers) on Thursday, Nov. 13. Patrons will be able to purchase 32-ounce cans of Cask & Larder beers for $7 each directly from The Brewery and choose from a rotating selection of three Cask & Larder beers. The first batch of Cask & Larder beers packaged in crowlers and sold to-go will be the Lone Palm Golden Ale, Olde Southern Wit, and Flame Out Pale Ale.

Beginning in February 2015, Cask & Larder beer crowlers will also be available for purchase at Swine & Sons Provisions, the newest endeavor from the Petrakises. Located directly west of Cask & Larder, Swine & Sons Provisions will specialize in takeout charcuterie, butcher sandwiches, seasonally inspired homemade ice creams, signature spices and rubs, scratch-made biscuits, daily pastry offerings and more.

Brewer Ron Raike departs Cask & Larder

In a seemingly unpredictable move, Florida brewer Ron Raike has departed Wonter Park’s Cask & Larder brewpub for a new and mysterious brewery project. Details of Raike’s next beer move have yet to materialize, Cask & Larder would only say that his next venture is an “independent” one.

In the interim, Cask & Larder has hired a “tandem of brewers” to hold down the fort while they search for new talent.

According to the Cask & Larder newsletter:

Florida micro-brewing pioneers, Scott and Bill Morton, brothers from St. Augustine, will maintain the brewing efforts at Cask & Larder, effective immediately. The Morton brothers, longtime friends of Cask & Larder owners/chefs James and Julie Petrakis, will oversee The Brewery during the transition until a new permanent brewmaster has been determined.

Scott and Bill Morton have earned their stripes in the Jacksonville craft brewing scene working to open Ragtime Tavern and Seven Bridges Grille and Brewery.

Cask & Larder sends Orlando limited liquid love

Cask and Larder pours new beers from brewmaster Ron Raike all of the time, but today is different. Today will see the tapping of three of Ron’s beers simultaneously and a special price for all of them.

From Cask and Larder:

With such sparse quantities of brew master Ron Raike’s THREE new summer beers available, one could logically reason you’d have to be (Liquid) stupid not be at Cask & Larder’s Limited Edition Beer Release Party on Thursday, July 24 from 4-6 p.m. — especially because the beers will be available for only $3 each.

What is the venerable Winter Park pub releasing?

LIQUID STUPID, 11.5 PERCENT ABV: Be smart and plan ahead if you plan on sampling more than a snifter or two of Ron’s new Liquid Stupid beer. This Belgian strong honey ale is as spicy as it is potent, exuding hints of ginger, orange zest, coriander and Belgian candy sugar while clocking in at a hefty 11.5 percent ABV.

5 POINTS CITRA HOPS IPA: Here’s a five-point plan for success: Don’t miss Cask & Larder’s 5 Points Citra Hops IPA release this time around. Back in March, Ron got his hands on the coveted Citra Hops (pictured above, literally) and it lasted about all of five minutes. Orlando Weekly even lauded it as “One of the four Florida craft beers we can’t wait to taste.” Ron was only working with 18-lbs of Citra Hops on this batch. The unique beast of an IPA boasts a 7.4 percent ABV and 65 IBU.

LAZY LARDER MELON: For beer enthusiasts looking for something slightly less potent but still seeking a unique local craft beer, Ron recently unveiled the Lazy Larder Melon, a golden ale with freshly juiced watermelon brewed in for a refreshing summertime treat. It, too, will be available today, but probably not much longer than that.

The limited beer release will take place in a few hours, today July 24th. Cask and Larder is located at 565 West Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park. The trouble starts at 4pm.

Cask and Larder to host Monastery to Mouth dinner

Press Release:

While Cask & Larder prides itself on being a leader in the local farm-to-table movement, we must admit we’re pretty giddy about our upcoming “Belgian Beer Dinner,” pairing beers inspired by Belgium’s famed monk brewers with our southern-inspired cuisine. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if this event spawns a new “Monastery-to-Mouth” movement.

Our resident brewmaster, Ron Raike, and a handful of his craft brewery friends are certainly no saints, which prevents them from practicing their craft at Belgium’s monastery brew houses. In our eyes though, they are beer-brewing Gods and well-versed in Belgium’s illustrious brewing history, which dates back to the medieval ages.

In the spirit of friendly competition, Ron and friends will be pitting some of their latest Belgian monastery inspired beers against each other at the July 29 dinner, which will also feature four of our favorite seasonal dishes.
