19.2 oz CCB seltzer and Florida Man DIPA

Cigar City Brewing Florida Man and Orange Seltzer now available in 19.2oz cans

Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing is debuting two of their offerings in new larger can options.  If you thought 12oz or 16oz of double IPA or hard seltzer was not enough for one session, then the brewery has heard you and an answer is on the way:

From the Cigar City Brewing newsletter:

Looking for a new way to enjoy your favorite CCB beer or seltzer while minimizing your trips to the fridge? We’ve got you covered with the announcement of 19.2-ounce cans of Florida Man Double IPA and Florida Orange Seltzer. These new package formats will join Jai Alai IPA in the pantheon of really, really big CCB cans this fall.

19.2 oz CCB seltzer and Florida Man DIPAPremiered by CANarchy labelmates Oskar Blues Brewery in 2012, 19.2-ounce cans (also called Stovepipe cans) were developed with the goal of maximizing volume in each can while utilizing much of the same equipment that fills and seals 12- and 16-ounce cans. These uber-tallboys use lids with the same dimensions as 12- and 16-ounce cans, and are the same height as 22-ounce cans. With the can size pushed to the limit of most brewery canning lines, Oskar Blues had fashioned the perfect single serve option for music venues, sports arenas, and any other locale that called for maximum beer or seltzer enjoyment with limited trips to the bar.

Cigar City Brewing made our first foray into the world of 19.2-ounce cans in early 2021 with the introduction of Jai Alai IPA 19.2-ounce cans, and we’re thrilled to announce two new additions to our “really tallboy” lineup: Florida Man Double IPA and Florida Orange Seltzer. Florida Man’s crazy hoppy profile has earned it fans across the country as they “find their next Florida Man,” and the beer’s flavor profile evolves and reveals new nuance as one works their way through a 19.2-ounce serving. Introduced in 2020, Cigar City Seltzer has become an iconic brand throughout CCB’s footprint, with Florida Orange becoming a fan favorite among flavors. With 19.2 ounces in each serving, Florida Orange Seltzer Stovepipes keep the party going without frequent trips to the cooler.

Want to get your hands on some of these stone-cold delicious Stovepipes? Head to our Beer Finder to track down a CCB-carrying store near you.

Cigar City Brewing announces new venue for Hunahpu’s Day

On the heels of the announcement that Cigar City Brewing will change the date of Hunahpu’s Day, comes the announcement of a new venue for the landmark Tampa Bay craft beer event.

Somewhat far down in a post that the brewery has a new partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Team is the news of the new venue.

From NHL.com:

“Cigar City Brewing is proud to become the Official Craft Beer Partner of the Tampa Bay Lightning and AMALIE Arena,” Cigar City Brewing Chief Operating Officer Justin Clark said. “We will work together to contribute to the Tampa Bay community and elevate the fan experience at AMALIE Arena. Not only do we look at the Lightning as a pillar of our Tampa community, we know how respected they are around the world. Their contributions to the community reach far beyond sports entertainment and we are excited to contribute to their success.”

Additionally, the Hunahpu’s Beer Festival, one of the premier craft beer events in the United States, will be moving to AMALIE Arena on March 13th, 2020. The festival will mark the 11th anniversary of the event in Tampa, Florida, and the first at AMALIE Arena. The festival is a one-day celebration of Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout, which is only released once a year. More details on the Hunahpu’s Beer Festival event at AMALIE Arena will be announced at a later date.

Cigar City Brewing Hunahpu Date

Commentary:

If Hunahpu’s Day is going to be held inside or even around Amalie arena, that may alleviate one of the biggest concerns with the hours-long beer festival: the sun.  Moving the event to an indoor venue with plenty of nearby paved parking could be a very positive change.  The date change still poses a question about conflict with Cycle Brewing’s Barrel-Aged Day, assuming that the event will still take place as usual.  Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpu’s Day has been the Saturday anchor event of Tampa Bay Beer Week since the inception of the weeklong celebration of Bay Area craft beer.  CCB moving the event to Friday does create a hole in Tampa Bay Beer Week – as 7venth Sun Brewery announced that their post-Hunahpu’s Day celebration, Hunahpu Hangover Day, has been moved to Saturday.  Maybe Sunday will be a recovery day?  Or more likely other events may move around as well.

Look for more information as it becomes available.

Cigar City Brewing teams up with Perrin Brewing to make Michigan-brewed Jai Alai IPA

Innovation & Celebration: Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai Produced in Comstock in Celebration of Collaborative Partnership

Partnership, innovation and celebration are all terms that come to mind when discussing the latest collaboration between Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing and Comstock’s Perrin Brewing Company, a Michigan brewed Jai Alai IPA. Born out of the desire to celebrate this partnership, this brew, overseen by Cigar City’s Brewmaster Wayne Wambles, is scheduled to be released January 28th in the Perrin Pub. This will be the first time Cigar City has served it’s beer in Michigan and will be the one and only batch of Michigan-brewed Jai Alai IPA.

Jai Alai IPA

Wayne personally traveled to Perrin’s Comstock Park facility in early January to reproduce his award-winning Jai Alai recipe alongside Perrin’s Director of Brewing operations John Stewart. Translating Cigar City’s iconic IPA to be brewed in Michigan was no easy task; Wambles meticulously recreated Tampa’s mineral-rich water profile and sent lot-specific hops from Cigar City Brewing’s Tampa facility to Perrin to match every facet of his citrus-forward ale. “I feel really good about the results,” said Wambles.

“After seeing the pH of the mash and kettle and the color post-boil, I think we hit this brew out of the park. Beer lovers in Michigan will be able to enjoy Jai Alai as fresh as they would if they were in Tampa. John and his team are superbly talented brewers and I’ve been excited to work alongside them.”

Clocking in at 7.5% ABV, Jai Alai IPA features an intense bouquet of tangerine and candied orange peel entice the nose while flavors of clementines, Valencia orange and subtle caramel provide counterpoint to an assertive bitterness and rich malt character. Bold hop flavor and aroma from six different hop varietals is front and center in this flavorful American IPA.

The Perrin Pub will be the only place to try this limited release brew, and both breweries plan for this release to be one-time-only.

Cigar City Brewing El Dorado Samiam

Four Tampa Bay breweries team up to create beer for Samiam

What is the result when three of Tampa Bay’s finest breweries team up with Slim Pickens Cider and Mead to brew a beer for the band Samiam?  A tasty beer, in this case it is called “El Dorado.”

Cigar City Brewing El Dorado SamiamFrom the Cigar City Newsletter:

A perennial favorite among the Cigar City staff, Berkeley, California’s long-running punk rock band Samiam sees heavy rotation not only around Cigar City but around many other Tampa Bay area breweries. When the opportunity presented itself to brew a beer with Samiam for The Fest in Gainesville and Pre-Fest in Tampa, we knew a few other aging punk rockers (aged, actually) in the Tampa Bay brewing community who would want to be a part of the action.

Along with our friends at Coppertail Brewing Co., Tampa Bay Brewing Company and Slim Pickens Cider and Mead, we developed this recipe with the guys from Samiam in honor of one of our favorite hops and favorite Samiam songs, El Dorado. The hop’s characteristic apricot and pear flavors are supported by a simple malt bill that allow the uniqueness of El Dorado to shine.

Look for Samiam’s El Dorado around Ybor City bars like Crowbar, The Orpheum, The Bricks and Cigar City Cider and Mead during Pre-Fest on October 26th and 27th and at venues throughout Gainesville during The Fest on October 28th, 29th and 30th.

This is the second time that Samiam has teamed up with Tampa Bay’s brewers and cidermakers, the first time was Capsized Cider.

Cigar City Brewing brings Florida Man Double IPA to cans

Cigar City Brewing recently added a sliver of news to their newsletter: Florida Man, their double IPA named after the imaginary character that gets unique headlines from many news agencies, will soon be coming to cans instead of its previous format of 22-oz bottles.

Who and What is Florida Man?

A clever Twitter user began compiling all the most Florida-worthy headlines in 2013 and attributing them to “the world’s worst superhero, Florida Man”.  What better style of beer to celebrate our unintentional official state animal than a Double IPA?  Big in flavor, bold in bitterness and with an ABV wallop that can’t be ignored, our Florida Man Double IPA has been brewed and adjusted several times to find just the right recipe worthy of our beleaguered hero.  The final recipe includes six different hops sourced from all over the world.  A healthy dose of Simcoe hops adds significant spice and texture while hops with tropical notes like Azacca and Pacific Jade are featured prominently.  A hop bill this hefty requires body and sweetness to bring it into balance, and Florida Man’s malt character handles the job as easily as a gator handles a distracted handler’s finger.
Cigar City Brewing Florida Man

Though we’ve released Florida Man in 22 oz. bottles in the past, this go-around we opted for 12 oz. cans.  Beyond the litany of benefits that aluminum cans offer (recyclability and more stable beer among them), we wanted to put this beer in a container that Florida men and women could bring to a gator farm, an arena football tailgate or any other Florida Man-approved activities.

Look for four pack cans coming soon to stores throughout Florida, but make sure you grab them as soon as you see them; Florida Man will be gone quicker than you can say “malicious arson”.
