Cigar City Brewing brings Florida Man Double IPA to cans

Cigar City Brewing recently added a sliver of news to their newsletter: Florida Man, their double IPA named after the imaginary character that gets unique headlines from many news agencies, will soon be coming to cans instead of its previous format of 22-oz bottles.

Who and What is Florida Man?

A clever Twitter user began compiling all the most Florida-worthy headlines in 2013 and attributing them to “the world’s worst superhero, Florida Man”.  What better style of beer to celebrate our unintentional official state animal than a Double IPA?  Big in flavor, bold in bitterness and with an ABV wallop that can’t be ignored, our Florida Man Double IPA has been brewed and adjusted several times to find just the right recipe worthy of our beleaguered hero.  The final recipe includes six different hops sourced from all over the world.  A healthy dose of Simcoe hops adds significant spice and texture while hops with tropical notes like Azacca and Pacific Jade are featured prominently.  A hop bill this hefty requires body and sweetness to bring it into balance, and Florida Man’s malt character handles the job as easily as a gator handles a distracted handler’s finger.

Though we’ve released Florida Man in 22 oz. bottles in the past, this go-around we opted for 12 oz. cans.  Beyond the litany of benefits that aluminum cans offer (recyclability and more stable beer among them), we wanted to put this beer in a container that Florida men and women could bring to a gator farm, an arena football tailgate or any other Florida Man-approved activities.

Look for four pack cans coming soon to stores throughout Florida, but make sure you grab them as soon as you see them; Florida Man will be gone quicker than you can say “malicious arson”.

Brews Banner to become a hulking bottled beer

Brews Banner, the mild-mannered Double India Pale Ale from Tampa’s Coppertail Brewing, is about to be the latest green-hopped monster in a bottle. The brewery announced earlier today that this monster of an IPA will be coming to bottles “soon.”

Brews Banner will peacefully meditate in the bottle, and when open become a river full of raging hops. Coppertail assures the drinking public, however, that this is one beer they will definitely like when it’s angry.

About Coppertail Brewing

Coppertail Brewing Co is a new production brewery in the Ybor neighborhood of Tampa, FL. It was founded by home-brewer and reformed attorney, Kent Bailey, and professional brewer, Casey Hughes in 2014 out of a desire to bring more hop-forward and Belgian influenced beer to the thirsty masses of Florida.

Coming to Florida from Terrapin Beer Company

Terrapin Beer Company is innovating and adding new beers the lineup all the time. The Athens, Georgia craft brewery used to be one of the most local craft breweries available on Florida shelves. Now, as Florida’s craft breweries have sprouted, changed, and evolved, Terrapin is working to keep sending some great beers to the Sunshine State, as well as keeping the hits rolling out.

From the Terrapin Beer Company Newsletter:

One of Terrapin’s new beers for 2015 will be a single-hop Double IPA from the Monster Beer Tour called “Hop Selection.” What is it?

“Hop Selection” Single Hopped Imperial IPA is a celebration of our favorite hop from the current harvest. Whether it’s an old classic, a new variety, or an experimental standout, this beer will continue to change yearly showcasing our favorite hop of the season.

Next up for Florida shelves? An old favorite in a new package:

Pinglehead Brewing and Aardwolf Brewery collaborate

Before Jacksonville’s Aardwolf Brewery opened, brewer Michael Payne traveled around Jacksonville collaborating with friends to get Aardwolf’s name and taste out to the beer drinking public. Now that Aardwolf is opened, established, and flowing freely, Payne is inviting Jacksonville’s finest brewers to come and brew with him at the Aardwolf den.

The first return collaboration beer was brewed with Pinglehead Brewing Company brewer Aaron Taylor on Tuesday. The only details released on this beer so far is that it will be a double IPA.
