Cigar City expands canning line

Cigar City Brewing Company has expanded their list of canned brews more and more in the past few months, and with plans (or at least can designs) to include Jose Marti Porter and Humidor IPA into the mix, they needed to bring in bigger guns.

Enter the new canning line, one with the potential to make 16oz tallboy cans.

From the Cigar City newsletter:

Canning line installation underway! Presently the floors have been dug up in the packaging hall making way for drains and other infrastructure necessary for our new can filler. Along with it comes all of the other conveyors and equipment that goes with the filler to bring you even more fresh beer! This new can filler will also have the potential of canning 16 oz. tall boy cans.. While there are no plans for this package yet, we are sure we will try it out sometime in the future! More than anything, this will make packaging our increasingly growing line up of canned brews even easier, especially with more of our brands making the switch! We hope to have some photos for you next month..

The new expansion, which will be completed by April, 2014, will include “a number of fermenting vessels, conditioning tanks and a filtration system.”

7venth Sun Brewery’s expansion, collaboration

Dunedin’s 7venth Sun Brewery never seems to sit still. Brewers Justin Stange, Megan O’Boyle, and Mike Lukacina always seem to have something new, something out there, and something for beer enthusiasts to try.

In a recent Creative Loafing article, 7venth Sun owners Justin Stange and Devon Kreps discuss their expansion plans in general terms:

The new production brewery and tasting room will be somewhere in North Pinellas — Dunedin and Ozona sites are under consideration — and will focus on barrel-aged beers.

“I want to do something new,’’ said Stange. “I want to keep changing it, experiment, see how people react to it. We’re really pushing it this time.’’

The brewery, located a short walk from the Dunedin Brewery, Florida’s oldest craft production brewery, has experienced slow but steady growth since it poured its first pint Jan. 7, 2012, producing 250 barrels its first year, 850 barrels last year and shooting for 1,000 this year, with limited local distribution, mostly draft with an expanding bottle selection.

7venth Sun also has a new collaboration beer with Edge Brewery of Barcelona in the works:

The owner [of Edge Brewery] is from Tampa and wants to introduce American craft brewing to Spain. He’s invited Stange and a dozen or so other brewers to collaborate in Barcelona.

Mile Marker seeks to expand Florida reach

Saint Augustine’s Mile Marker Brewing has been serving the First Coast for two years now, and they are looking at expanding their Florida reach in 2014.

According to an article published in today’s Saint Augustine Record, Mile Marker has two goals for 2014:

The goal for Mile Marker in 2014 is to expand the brand’s reach. In the near future, the company would like to have its beers available in cans at area stores.

Currently, the beer is only packaged in kegs. It is distributed locally by Burkhardt Sales and Service and is also distributed in South Florida by Brown Distributing.

That leaves the rest of the state as possible new markets.

“Our main goal is production,” said Joy, who added that the brewery is looking to quadruple output.

Joy and head brewer Taylor Strunk take turns monitoring the process, checking on each batch, usually twice a day.

Cigar City’s next high seas adventure

Cigar City Brewing’s Joey Redner and Wayne Wambles recently did an interview with Puerto Rico’s Beer Rican in a YouTube video. The video features footage of Cigar City’s staff brewing at Cervezas del Sur in Ponce, Puerto Rice and lots of information on CCB’s island adventures. In the original video, Joey and Wayne discuss Cigar City’s Puerto Rican brewing adventures, the process of making, shipping, and canning Dry-Hopped on the High Seas, and Cigar City’s goals for expansion into Caribbean and South American markets.

Some highlights:

Dry-Hopped on the High Seas:
*The first batch was dry-hopped with Simcoe hops, and the second batch will feature Ahtanum hops.
*The IPA was shipped unfiltered from the brewery in Ponce with dry hops, the beer then arrives in Jacksonville, is shipped to Tampa where it is centrifuged, carbonated, and canned.
*The whole process from Ponce to Tampa takes 6-7 days from container to can.
*In this beer, Wambles has learned a lot about water profiles and has taken advantage of Cervezas del Sur’s reverse-osmosis filtration and stripped out all minerals in the water. Wambles then rebuilt the water profile of Dry-Hopped on High Seas to be a blend of Burton-on-Trent, London, and Dortmund to feature a sulfate bite in the finish of the beer.

Cigar City and the Caribbean market:
*Cigar City will continue Dry-Hopped on the High Seas.
*Cigar City would like to brew beer for Puerto Rico.
*Cigar City has a goal of producing beer at Cervezas del Sur for the Caribbean, Panamanian, and possibly Brazilian beer markets.
*Cervezas del Sur has a 200 hL (170-barrel) brewhouse with fermenters as large as 1,000 hL (852 barrels) that Cigar City can utilize for brewing in Ponce.

Shipyard to expand Florida operations

Shipyard Brewing has announced intentions to become a Florida beer. Shipyard is presently based out of Portland, Maine with pubs in the Northeastern U.S. and two pubs in Central Florida (one in Orlando and one in Clearwater). The installation of a 20-barrel brewing system in the Clearwater pub marks a significant investment in Florida by the Maine company. The Sea Dog Pub began brewing on a 1.5 barrel brewing system once each month according to an article in Tampa’s Creative Loafing. Shipyard would like the expanded operation to be open by February.

Shipyard has made several previous forays into brewing fresh beer in the Florida market, opening a pub in the Orlando Airport and another pub called “The Shipyard Emporium” in Winter Park adjacent to Rollins College. Both of those facilities are now historical, having closed their doors after several years of brewing unique house beers.

Shipyard is probably best known as the maker of Sea Dog Blue Paw Wheat Ale, Monkey Fist IPA, and Pumpkinhead Ale. Shipyard says that they want to be considered a local brew in the Florida market.
