The imperial stout was so popular that it got its own once-a-year release day, now Due South Brewing is announcing the release of two variants of their popular Mariana Trench Imperial Stout.

Cigar City Brewing releases Cow Boss Imperial Milk Stout in collaboration with Florida Cattelmen’s Foundation

Press Release:

The Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation collaborated closely with Cigar City Brewing over several months to develop Cow Boss Imperial Milk Stout, an authentic, Florida-sourced craft beer. Aged over Florida Cypress wood, Cow Boss will be available in mid-June in 22-oz bottles and on draft throughout Florida for a limited time. Cigar City Brewing will make a donation to the Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation in support of their mission to preserve the history, heritage and ideals of Florida cattle producers.

“We couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with Cigar City Brewing to develop Cow Boss. The Cigar City Brewing team and skill set are exceptional. Their ability to highlight authentic Florida, helps tell the story of the Florida cattle rancher to those who may not know of us,” notes Jim Strickland, past-Chairman of the Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation (Strickland initiated the collaboration during his tenure). “Additionally, their generosity to help support the Foundation with a donation is further reinforcement of their commitment to the Florida Cattle ranching community.”

Authentic Collaboration

“I wanted to make a beer that not only included indigenous raw materials, like Florida cypress, but also an ingredient that tied the beer to the cattle as well. Lactose is a non-fermentable milk sugar that adds body and sweetness to the beer. Cypress can add a sponge cake to vanilla wafer-like character to the beer. I decided to make a beer that leaned towards a dessert offering at that point, which brought back memories of my grandmother’s chocolate layer cake that she used to make me when I was a child,” notes Wayne Wambles, brew master at Cigar City Brewing.

The Cow Boss label was designed by cattle rancher and artist, Sean Sexton, of Vero Beach. Sexton manages a family owned 700-Acre Cow-Calf operation in Indian River County. He is represented in private and public art collections throughout the Southeast and received a Florida Individual Artist’s Fellowship in 2001. The label features a Cracker Cow, headed out of the scrub toward the herd with the “cow boss” on his horse and his dog, following closely behind— a common sight on working Florida cattle ranches.

The name, Cow Boss, depicts the one in charge of the cattle operation on a ranch. The Cow Boss chooses where the cowboys will ride and is ultimately responsible for any and all cowboys hired.

“Cigar City Brewing considered several names for this special brew. They kindly allowed us to recommend the final name, Cow Boss. This name and the artistic depiction on the label really conveys the lifestyle of the Florida cattle rancher,” notes Tommy Harper, Chairman of the Florida Cattleman’s Foundation. “We have a story to tell about the impact of the Florida cattle industry and what the Foundation is doing to preserve it’s history and heritage. Cow Boss can help begin a conversation about the Florida cattle rancher to a wider audience.”

The beer was aged over Florida Cypress wood. The Florida Cypress was sourced and donated by Kempfer Cattle Company and Kempfer Sawmill. This cypress wood was critical to the aging and taste profile of Cow Boss Imperial Milk Stout.
The Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation plans to utilize the donation of $10,000 from a portion of the proceeds made by Cigar City Brewing to support the Florida Cattlemen’s Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy was created with the goal of identifying and developing future leaders for both the Florida Cattlemen’s Association (FCA) and the Florida Cattle industry, as a whole.

From Beer to Beef

In addition to the development of this craft beer honoring the Florida cattle ranching industry, James Beard Award nominee and chef, Greg Baker, of The Refinery and Fodder & Shine in Tampa, kindly developed a beef and beer pairing recipe in support of the collaboration between Cigar City Brewing and the Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation. (The recipe and photo for Baker’s Peach & Coffee Braised Beef Shanks is attached).

“We greatly appreciate the attention and support of such a high caliber chef as Greg Baker. Known not only for his outstanding skills as a chef, but also for his appreciation and dedication to Florida heritage, this recipe pairs the skills of Cigar City’s brewing team led by Wayne Wambles with notable, James Beard Award nominated chef, Greg Baker, and honors the Florida Cattle ranching industry in a winning culinary combination,” notes Ashley Hughes with the Florida Beef Council.

Orchid Island Brewery begins barrel aging

Orchid Island Brewery of Vero Beach is known for their citrus-forward beers. Ruby Red DIPA, Citron Farmhouse Ale, and Jungle Trail Black IPA all have elements of citrus as well as a relatively high alcohol content. These citrus beers are what has built the brewhouse at Orchid Island, but starting last week, Orchid Island has begun barrel aging their beers, beginning with an imperial stout.

From Orchid Island:

Orchid Island Brewery Imperial Stout + three 50 gallon Angel’s Envy finishing barrels (former ruby Port barrels) + 150 Ugandan, Madagascar or Mexican vanilla beans = Ambrosia… We’ll revisit them in two or three months to see how things are going.

Orchid Island Brewery is located at 2855 Ocean Drive in Vero Beach.

About Orchid Island Brewery

Orchid Island Brewery is a three barrel micro-brewery from Vero Beach, Florida. Great care is put into our recipes to provide a unique twist on trendy styles using local Indian River citrus. We look towards the history of Vero Beach in creating beer recipes. This town was built around the citrus industry and we pay homage to where we come from. Indian River County, and the town Orchid Island more specifically, is widely recognized as a region that grows the world’s finest citrus; similar to Sonoma or Napa Valley being synonymous with high quality grapes.

What makes Orchid Island unique is its proximity to the ocean and the Indian River lagoon. During the worst winter cold fronts, the ocean and river have a warming effect over the island that keeps the fruit just above freezing. The end result is great tasting citrus which contributes to the unique OIB beers.

Coppertail Brewing and Cigar City Brewing collaborate on Sabotage

Cigar City Brewing’s Josh Brengle recently made a trip through Ybor City to meet Coppertail Brewing’s Casey Hughes in a match of wits that turned out some great beer. The duo’s minds thought up the next bottle release for Coppertail, an imperial stout dubbed “Sabotage.”

Sabotage has been fermenting at Coppertail and now that it is bottled, the brewery says it will “be in the Tasting Room soon. Keep an eye on Facebook, as more details are available we will announce news here first.”

Coppertail Brewing is located at 2601 East 2nd Avenue just South of Ybor City in Tampa.

Orlando Brewing to release Hard Caliber Imperial Stout

Orlando Brewing will introduce a new organic Imperial Stout to their taproom’s lineup of local beers with Art of Craft, a beer and art release event.

The first keg of Hard Caliber, the Central Florida brewery’s new 9% ABV Imperial Stout, will be tapped at 1pm. This rich and robust beer was brewed with house toasted oats, roasted barley and magnum hops. Hard Caliber is the second in the company’s Senator Series, a line brewed by Orlando Brewing’s Travis Smith. Travis describes the new stout as “roasty and warm like Florida summer, brewed to keep you cozy in the winter.”
1pm will also mark the unveiling of the taproom’s newest art show, a line up showcasing the work of Orlando artist Steven Arterbury. Steven has created local art for nearly 20 years and will be showcasing fourteen handcrafted pieces.

From 3pm-5pm the brewery will host a meet and greet, giving beer drinkers and art lovers an opportunity to meet the artist and the brewer. During the meet and greet all Orlando Brewing beers will be Happy Hour priced. At 5pm both artisans will give a short talk about their craft. Food from Backhaus, a local German artisan bakery, will be available for purchase between 3pm-6:30pm. Orlando Brewing will hold a free tour at 7pm followed by the original music of local artists Apollo Radio, and Grant Lives in Every Streetlight from 9pm to 12am. Cycle Brewing updates

Saint Petersburg’s first craft brewery has given a few updates lately from the happenings on Central Avenue. True to the artsy style they have come to embrace, Cycle has begun posting many updates in the form of videos.

First, Cycle has posted a video of brewery staff laying down an imperial stout in a barrel. What is most noticeable, aside from Cycle staff’s love of eccentric socks, is that the beer will spend almost a year in a barrel- dated 6/11/14 and arriving Spring of 2015.

Next, Cycle is joining the ranks of Florida’s crowlering breweries. Cycle’s adoption of this machine marks the third brewery in the state (along with Boynton Beach’s Due South & Tampa’s Cigar City) to adopt one of these machines.

Finally, Cycle has two session IPA’s that have been named to Ratebeer.com‘s list of Top 50 session IPAs in the world. Cycle’s Freewheel IPA is listed at #30 and Cycle’s Session IPA is listed at #36, respectively.

Cycle Brewing is located at 534 Central Avenue in Saint Petersburg.
