Pinglehead Brewing gets new head brewer

Orange Park- Pinglehead Brewing Company, the brewery inside Brewer’s Pizza of Orange Park, announced a relatively new face is taking over their brewery. Aaron Taylor has worked up his clown feet to become the Pinglehead head brewer. Aaron takes over the reins of Pinglehead after working as an assistant brewer under former brewer Keegan Malone with the assistance of Aardwolf brewer Michael Payne.

Aaron has some big shoes to fill, and not just because Pinglehead’s mascot is a clown. Former brewer Keegan Malone brought several medals home from the Best Florida Beer Championship and has departed from Pinglehead.

Photos are up on Pinglehead’s Facebook page of Aaron and his recent brewing experience at Pinglehead.

Ragtime Tavern celebrates 30 years

Atlantic Beach- The month of July marks more than just fireworks and the Fourth of July holiday for one of Jacksonville’s oldest craft breweries. For Ragtime Tavern, an anchor of a pub on Jacksonville’s eastern seashore, July 2013 marks 30 years of business and 20 years of brewing.

The years have been kind to Ragtime. The restaurant began under the ownership of the Morton family who had the revolutionary idea to begin brewing beer on the restaurant premises to serve to thirsty patrons. At the time Ragtime began brewing, there were only a handful of breweries in Florida as compared to the current eruption of craft breweries throughout the Sunshine State.

The idea to brew in a restaurant did not go unnoticed– the many tourists and locals of Jacksonville took notice, and so did a restaurant chain looking at the same concept. In 1997, the Big River Group (now called Craft Works) bought the establishment from the Morton family and has run the beach pub ever since.

The brewery at Ragtime is run by Scott Bannester who keeps the taps full and the patrons happy. Bannester makes sure that Dolphin’s Breath Lager is always fresh and the Sweet Magnolia Brown is always in season.

Ragtime is running specials throughout the month of July to celebrate their anniversary.

Bold City Brewery goes for the cans

Jacksonville- On June 19th, 2013, the Bold City Brewery in Jacksonville joined the ranks of Florida’s canning breweries. Bold City began their canning with their core brown ale, Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale in 6-packs of 12oz cans. According to Bold City’s head brewer Brian Miller, other brands will be coming to cans in the future including Killer Whale Cream Ale, Mad Manatee IPA, and 1901 Roasted Red Ale.

With the addition of a canning line, Bold City will join the aluminum ranks of neighboring Intuition Ale Works, fellow Floridians Tampa Bay Brewing Company, and Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing. All of these Florida Breweries proudly can their beer and own their canning line. Other breweries, including most recently Jacksonville’s Green Room Brewery have canned using the Craft Beer Crew mobile canning line service.

Bold City Brewery announces new seasonal

Jacksonville- Bold City Brewery announced last week that they had a “a special surprise tapping of our Summer Seasonal.” They put off the tapping until June 13th and then finally they unveiled this brew to the world.

From the Bold City Brewery Newsletter, as written by Brian Miller, Bold City’s Director of Operations:

My Dad, Big John Miller as we like to call him, has been requesting, on the verge of begging, for us to brew an Apricot Wheat ale. We have been trying to fit it in the brew schedule for the last year or so but have been unable to. With Father’s day coming up on Sunday, we had to get it done. So we brewed, packaged, got a sweet label made all without him knowing. Last night, we unveiled the new brew with the whole family here and he was super stoked. It was a fantastic moment and one myself and I’m sure my Dad, will not soon forget. The new ale is called Big John’s Apricot wheat and it has a picture of the one and only Big John Miller on it.

Apparently the Millers kept the beer secret in order to surprise their patriarch, and now it will be distributed in Jacksonville. No word yet on if this beer will become a permanent addition to the Bold City lineup.
