Sanford Brewing Company begins construction

Press Release: Owners of the Sanford Brewing Company (SBC) announce the beginning of construction to transform an 85-year-old property on Sanford, Florida’s recently renovated Sanford Avenue into a new, 4,500 square-foot craft beer brewery and taproom.

“We chose Sanford as the location for our brewery because we wanted to be a part of the exciting growth occurring along Sanford Avenue and other parts of Sanford’s historic downtown,” says Robyn Esser, one of SBC’s four owners. “We see this area becoming an important central Florida entertainment district, where visitors can stroll along several blocks to enjoy a variety of craft beer, wine, and live music.” In addition to Esser, SBC owner-operators include Chris Esser, Borden “Bo” Hallowes, and Allan Jackson.

SBC, which is located at 400 South Sanford Avenue (corner of Sanford Avenue and 4th Street), will include a 15-barrel (465-gallon) primary brewing system, a 3-barrel (93-gallon) pilot brewing system, and a 100+ seat taproom with food service. After operations are established, company owners intend to distribute SBC craft beer locally and across the state of Florida.

“SBC will be a tremendous economic asset to the newly redeveloped Sanford Avenue. As part of the downtown Community Redevelopment Area, we are excited that this new business will become a vital part of this emerging entertainment district,” says Bob Turk, Sanford’s Economic Development Director.

SBC owners are hoping to begin brewing and serving the public before the second quarter of 2016. The project received two grants from the city of Sanford to support interior and exterior renovation.

SBC, www.sanfordbrewing.com, is guided by the mission of creating quality craft beer, delivered responsibly in an entertaining venue, to delight and enlighten customers, bring value to the community, and enhance the Florida craft beer industry.

Cigar City’s new brewery facility

Cigar City Brewing owner Joey Redner has a problem with his beer: he cannot make beer fast enough for the thirsty masses who enjoy his brewery’s creations.

CCB has been looking into options for increased production and has even signed a contract with Lakeland’s The Brew Hub to increase his production by 20,000 barrels, but that is not enough.

Tuesday, in an interview with Brewbound, Redner revealed that Cigar City was looking into building a new brewery from the ground up. CCB has been in their current building at 3924 West Spruce Street in Tampa since 2008, but they have outgrown the building in terms of capacity. The brewery cannot make enough beer to satisfy demand. Redner says he thinks Cigar City could possibly sell between 160,000-175,000 barrels annually, but in order to do this, decisions must be made.

Redner said that he has looked at a site within the city of Tampa, and also searched outside Tampa for a new site. Redner says that the current legislative session in Florida has caused him some concern, and that concern has given him a tough decision to possibly build a new brewery (an $8 million construction project) outside of Florida.

“My concern is the general legislative uncertainty,” he said. “What will they come at us with next? At the end of the day, moving out of state is not the greatest option but it is something I have to consider.”

We wanted to get going (with the expansion) in about four months. We wanted to start making purchases but now we have to wait and see what happens legislatively.”

While HB 1329 (the so-called “Craft-Killing” bill) has been given a “strike all” provision, there is still a similar bill alive in the Florida Senate.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company to open Pinellas brewery

Tampa Bay Brewing Company is looking to expand its horizons beyond its two current locations in Ybor City and South Florida’s Coral Springs. Tampa Bay Brewing Company, one of the elder statesmen of Florida’s local breweries at 18 years in business, has announced plans to move forward on a location in Ozona, just off of the Pinellas Trail at 133 Candy Lane. The opening would indeed be candy to local beer lovers, as the new facility would add a 15,000 square foot production area to the brewery’s toolbox.

There are a few hurtles to overcome before the new brewery opens. The location is currently occupied, and the Doble family, owners of the brewery have offered $1.04 million for the facility. Next, the new location is near a school, and a variance is required by the county. The variance was granted conditionally and the facility is moving foreward. According to the article in the Tampa Bay Times:

By the end of 2014, David Doble hopes to hire 75 workers for the Ozona location, including office staffers, production workers and servers. He’s hoping for more robust sales of Old Elephant Foot IPA and wants to add at least one more brew to his repertoire.

“We already have a name picked out. It will be called the Reef Donkey. It will have a secret selection of hops with a lemon/citrus and slightly tropical fruit aroma,” Doble said. “Anyone who has fished this area knows a reef donkey is a nickname for the amberjack, and fishing is a great part of this area. We want it to be all about our locale.”
