Orchid Island Brewing announces taproom closure and brewery investments

Vero Beach’s Orchid Island Brewery made the announcement that they would be closing their Vero Beach taproom. In a bit of good news, the brewery also announced that they would still be brewing and would also be making investments into the brewery.

From Orchid Island Brewery:

Dear Friends & Family, ‬

‪On February 1st of this year, our understanding of CoVid-19 was that the US had only 11 confirmed cases and the East Coast had its first. ‬

‪Wow, what a difference six months can make! No question, we are living in unprecedented and unimaginable times. One day we will look back on what was the worst of times relative to the virus. We don’t know how different they will be any more than we knew back in February how different they would be now. ‬

‪Every day since has presented the question of what pathway we (OIB) should walk, how sustainable will it be, and what will be the outcome? To that end in light of the current circumstances, we’ve made the very difficult decision to let our beloved taproom go. If your reading this you’ve most likely shared in very exciting and warm memories in our pub cultivated together over the last 6 years.

We will hold on to the original brew house room (remember when?) and carry forward our pursuit of crafting world-class citrus-infused beers. We are infinitely grateful to the countless number of people who have supported us along the way. It has been a very challenging decision to put it lightly.‬

‪In the same breath, we’re also very excited to share that we’ve invested in a Wild Goose canning line! We anticipate its completion in late November. It is our hope that we can continue to be a part of great memories albeit in a different way. Please look for us to continue reaching out more & more about getting you freshly canned OIB beer. ‬

‪In the end, we will all have unique perspectives and memories of what happened in the last 6 months. Some of those memories will be of tragedies witnessed or experienced, but some will also be of magical moments spent secluded with loved ones that would otherwise not have presented themselves. Seize the moment to create the memories that when you look back, you will cherish remembering. Hoping this weekend becomes a part of that for you. Make it a safe one!‬

Orchid Island Brewery taproom sign

What Orchid Island is going through is similar to so many other craft breweries in Florida and beyond. While many are adjusting to the new reality of COVID, many more will be making tough decisions on the road ahead. The good news that we see here is Orchid Island Brewery continuing their standard of world-class beer and bringing Florida’s citrus history to many through Star Ruby and the rest of the OIB lineup.

Orchid Island Brewery celebrates one year of craft beer

The beauty of having so many nascent craft breweries in the state of Florida is that many of them will be celebrating milestone anniversaries at the same time. Orchid Island Brewery has experienced growth and expansion in their first year, and tomorrow (September 5th) this will be cause for great celebration.

We’ll have around six of our own beers on tap, including:

*Indian River Citrus IPA (zested with with locally grown Ruby Red grapefruit)
*Citron – our wild yeast Cabernet barrel-aged Saison (zested with locally grown oranges and Meyer lemons)

Orchid Island Brewery is expanding

Orchid Island Brewery, Indian River’s craft brewery, is expanding after only a few months in business. After opening in late August 2014, the small brewery will be moving its tasting room and across the courtyard from their current location at 2855 Ocean Drive. The new tasting room should come online around December, according to an article in local newspaper TC Palm.

The brewery began its business focusing on the Indian River citrus industry and works to put local and indigenous ingredients in every batch of beer head brewer Alden Bing makes. Orchid Island’s mainstay is an India Pale Ale called Star Ruby, named for the fruit that made Indian River famous.

Orchid Island currently distributes to a few spots around town, but Bing says he is having trouble keeping up with demand in his own tasting room. The best place to try Orchid Island beers is the brewery tasting room which is currently open from 5-8pm on Tuesday through Thursday then from 5-10pm on Friday, Saturday offers 12-10pm hours, and Sunday and Monday the tasting room is closed. Look for new hours after the brewery expands.

Orchid Island Brewery taps Citron Farmhouse Ale

Orchid Island Brewery of Vero Beach is making a name for themselves with small-batch beers that focus on the citrus flavors inherent to the area. Their newest beer, Citron, is a citrus-focused farmhouse ale.

From Orchid Island:

Citron is our newest beer on tap. Wild/Farmhouse Ales or Saison (season) originated on the farms of southern Belgium. Traditionally the characteristics were driven by the local produce available on the farm during a given season. We used Indian River lemons plus Brettanomyces (Bret) for this batch.

Orchid Island Brewery is now open

In an announcement months in the making, Orchid Island Brewery of Vero Beach is now open.

The brewery officially posted opening on Facebook this weekend:

So, it begins to flow! We are officially open. A big thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. It has been an incredible journey. Looking forward to some great times. Cheers!

About Orchid Island Brewery:

OIBC is a 3bbl artisan brewery… Great care is put into our recipe designs to provide a unique twist on trendy styles using local Indian River citrus. We look towards the history of Vero Beach in creating beer recipes. This town was built around the citrus industry and we pay homage to where we come from. Indian River County, and the town Orchid Island more specifically, is widely recognized as a region that grows the world’s finest citrus; similar to Sonoma or Napa Valley being synonymous with high quality grapes. The geographical makeup of the island makes this possible. During the winter months when citrus is in its peak harvest, cold snaps sweeten the fruit. If the fruit freezes, it also spoils however. What makes Orchid Island unique is its proximity to the ocean and the Indian River lagoon. During the worst winter cold fronts, the ocean and river have a warming affect over the island that keeps the fruit just above freezing. The end result is great tasting citrus that contributes to the breweries unique beers.
