Saint Arnold Brewing introduces two new beers to cans

Press Release: With sales of its canned beers doubling during the past six months, Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, is expanding its canning program to include two additional year-round brews. Six-packs of 12-ounce cans of Saint Arnold Weedwacker and four-packs of 12-ounce cans of Saint Arnold Endeavour Double IPA are arriving in stores this week.

Saint Arnold introduced cans about 18 months ago with its top selling year-round beers, Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer and Santo joining the Houston brewery’s rotating seasonals. When Saint Arnold introduced Art Car IPA and Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils last year, both were launched in cans rather than bottles. During the past six months, Saint Arnold’s canned beer sales have jumped 110 percent, with cans making up nearly one third of Saint Arnold’s total packaged beer sales.

“There are a lot of things to like about cans – they are easy to carry to the beach and the pool, won’t break, they protect beer from light and are easy to recycle,” said Brock Wagner. “I have to admit that I used to be among those who viewed craft beer in cans with some skepticism, but the level of community acceptance and enthusiasm for cans has made a believer out of me.”

Also arriving in stores, restaurants and pubs throughout Texas, Louisiana and Florida are cans of Saint Arnold Oktoberfest, which is replacing dwindling supplies of Saint Arnold Summer Pils. Each of the new cans features the updated and refreshed Saint Arnold label art introduced earlier this summer.

Saint Arnold Weedwacker has won a medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the German-Style Wheat Ale category for the past three years running – including a Gold Medal in 2015. Saint Arnold Endeavour Double IPA was originally brought to market as Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 11. It won the Silver Medal in the highly competitive Imperial IPA category at the 2012 World Beer Cup. Saint Arnold Oktoberfest is a 3-time medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival in the Scottish-Style Ale category.

The new cans of Saint Arnold Weedwacker and Saint Arnold Endeavour Double IPA will phase out 12-ounce bottles. Endeavour will still be available in 22-ounce bottles and both beers will still be available on tap.

Saint Arnold is shipping new year-round lager to Florida today

Press Release: Saint Arnold brewers came home from their annual hop selection trips to the Czech Republic with more than just Saaz hops. They also had acquired a love for fresh Bohemian pilsners. Because of this love, Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, is releasing its latest year-round offering, Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils. Available on draft and in 12 ounce cans, Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils will begin rolling out to stores, restaurants and pubs throughout Texas, Louisiana and Florida today.

Emphasizing the flavor and aromatic qualities of Saaz hops, Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils harkens back to the origins of the style which was born in Pilzn almost 300 years ago. It is bright and hoppy with a distinctive Saaz hop nose and a rich, malty body. It was a big hit when originally brewed as a special release in Saint Arnold’s Icon Series in 2013, and the surprisingly strong demand prompted Saint Arnold to add it year-round. It is Saint Arnold’s first year-round lager.

“We released Saint Arnold Summer Pils 19 years ago, and it is a 6-time medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival, so we have been brewing lagers for a long time,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils is the Swiss Army Knife of our beer family – it is appropriate for a lot of different occasions and accessible to a lot of different palates.”

The popular Saint Arnold Summer Pils will remain a staple of the brewery’s rotating seasonal lineup.

With Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils, Saint Arnold’s brewers took care to use traditional methods for heating the mash to achieve a rich, malty body. They removed a portion of the mash, boiled it, and then mixed it back in. This process, called ‘decoction,’ results in a slightly richer bodied beer by causing caramelization that deepens the beer’s color and lowers the fermentability of the sugars. The brewers’ selection of Saaz hops was also a tip of the cap to tradition. Saaz is a traditional aroma hop that has been grown in the Czech Republic for centuries.

While craft pilsners represent only about two percent of total craft beer sales, according to market research firm IRI, it has been the fastest growing craft beer style in recent years. Looking at the total beer market, lagers represent more than 80 percent of all beer sold by volume, which suggests that craft pilsner have plenty of room to grow.

“A big reason craft lagers and craft pilsners are growing is an appreciation for brewing tradition and an increased understanding of how difficult it is to consistently brew high quality craft lager,” said Wagner. “Brewers tend to gravitate towards enjoying light, flavorful beers at the end of the day. Actually, at any time of the day! Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils is perfect for that.”

It’s Always Time

Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils owes its name to the old adage, “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” which suggests that it’s always time for a good time. Houston-based Lopez Negrete Communications designed the label art, which features the familiar profile of Saint Arnold of Metz, the Patron Saint of Brewers. He is holding a pocket watch with hops for hands that reads five o’clock. A silhouette of Saint Arnold’s historic north Houston brewery is visible in the background.

Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils is best enjoyed at 38° to 50°F.

5 O’Clock Pils Specifications:
• Original gravity: 1.053
• Final gravity: 1.011
• Alcohol: 5.2% ABV
• Bitterness: 40 IBUs

Saint Arnold Brewing now available in Orlando

Press Release:

Brock Wagner, the Founder/Brewer of Saint Arnold Brewing Co., the oldest craft brewery in Texas, will visited with craft beer fans in the Orlando area last week to introduce Saint Arnold’s selection of craft beers. This is the first time Saint Arnold, listed among the 50 largest craft breweries in America by the Brewer’s Association, will be available in Orlando area pubs, restaurants and in stores.

Starting this week, City Beverages will begin distributing Saint Arnold’s most popular brands, including:

• Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer – This four-time Great American Beer Festival medal winner is Saint Arnold’s most popular beer. Fancy Lawnmower is a true German-style Kölsch — crisp, yet with a sweet malty body that is balanced by a complex, citrus hop character.

• Saint Arnold Elissa IPA – A medal winner in the Great American Beer Festival’s Extra Special Bitter or Strong Bitter category, Saint Arnold Elissa IPA is named after the tall ship ELISSA, and a portion of proceeds is earmarked for donation to the ship’s preservation.

• Santo – A two-time Great American Beer Festival medal winner, Santo is the newest addition to Saint Arnold’s year-round selection. The original “black Kölsch,” Santo features a distinct dark malt flavor, but is surprisingly light bodied and floral.

“Like many people from around the country and around the world, I have fond memories of visiting Orlando for other reasons in the past. I’m excited to have our beer now available in this destination city,” said Wagner.

“My favorite part of my job is sharing the passion for beer and brewing. I’m looking forward to talking with fellow craft beer lovers about Saint Arnold this week,” Wagner said.

Saint Arnold Brewing is named for a seventh-century bishop of Metz, France. St. Arnold (b. 580 AD, d. 640) was a patron saint of brewers who discouraged the community from drinking impure water, recommending beer instead. The brewery operates out of a 104,000 square foot 3-story brick building originally constructed in 1914. Saint Arnold’s brewhouse was imported from Klosterbrauerei Raitenhaslach, a Bavarian monastery.

In addition to Orlando, Saint Arnold beer is now available throughout Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Gulf Coast of Florida to the Florida Keys. The brewery has won a mantel-full of awards, including 20 medals from the Great American Beer Festival and numerous wins at the World Beer Cup, where judges in 2014 awarded the Bronze Medal to Santo in the American-Style Dark Lager category.

Saint Arnold Brewing is coming to South Florida

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, has announced its long-awaited expansion to Miami. The decision comes nearly a year and a half after Saint Arnold first established a presence in the Florida panhandle and along the Florida Gulf Coast.

“We wanted to take time to establish a solid footprint along the Gulf Coast before expanding into Miami,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “During that time, we have seen demand for craft beer explode throughout Florida. We are very excited to join the Miami craft beer community.”

Eagle Brands Sales has signed on as Saint Arnold’s Miami distributor. Starting the week of April 6th, Saint Arnold’s most popular brands, including Fancy Lawnmower, Santo, and the brewery’s rotating
selection of seasonal offerings, plus the brewery’s fastest growing brand – Ale Wagger – will be available throughout Southern Florida, including the Florida Keys.

Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer – A true German-style Kölsch that is crisp yet has a sweet malty body that is balanced by a complex, citrus hop character. This delicate flavor is achieved through multiple additions of German Hallertauer hops.

Santo – The originator of the black Kölsch style, it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor.

Saint Arnold Ale Wagger – A beautiful, deep copper brown ale. It has a full, malty body with hints of chocolate, a touch of sweetness and a light hop flavor. A portion of proceeds support local animal welfare initiatives.

Saint Arnold Seasonals – When combined, Saint Arnold’s seasonal selection is the brewery’s top seller. It includes Spring Bock, Summer Pils, Oktoberfest, Christmas Ale and Winter Stout.

Coinciding with Saint Arnold’s introduction to Miami, Wagner will meet with craft beer enthusiasts on April 8th and 9th, discussing the brewery he established more than 20 years ago, sampling beers and sharing his brewing philosophies. Planned events include:

Saint Arnold to send Pumpkinator to Florida

Press Release:

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, today announced a treat for craft beer fans: the release of Saint Arnold Pumpkinator. A highly anticipated seasonal offering that won a silver medal in the Pumpkin Beer category at the 2012 World Beer Cup, Saint Arnold Pumpkinator will begin appearing on store shelves and in restaurants on Monday, October 13th.

Originally released in 2009 as Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 9, Saint Arnold Pumpkinator is an Imperial Stout Pumpkin Ale. It was added to Saint Arnold’s rotation of seasonals in October 2011. The original concept was to brew the best pumpkin beer in the world, incorporating large quantities of pureed pumpkin in the beer along with the spices that are associated with pumpkin beers. In fact, Saint Arnold’s Pumpkinator recipe used 800 lbs of pumpkin, which is enough to make over 900 pumpkin pies.

“Pumpkinator began as an experiment to see if we could make a pumpkin beer that we really liked since I’m not a fan of most pumpkin beers,” said Saint Arnold founder/brewer Brock Wagner. “We have ended up not only with a delicious beer, but one that can be aged for several years to allow all of the spices to mellow and evolve.”

Numerous historical sources confirm that pumpkin beer was popular in colonial America in the 18th century and into the 19th century. George Washington was among the homebrewers who used pumpkin as a substitute for malt – because of the flavor and the fact that pumpkins were plentiful while quality malts were scarce. Resurrected by craft brewers in the 1980s, the Brewer’s Association says pumpkin beers now outsell all other seasonal styles. Market research from Nielsen finds sales of pumpkin-flavored beers have grown by more than 1,500 percent during the past 10 years.

Saint Arnold Pumpkinator should be allowed to warm to at least 50 degrees before enjoying. The beer will be available in 22-ounce bombers sold separately or in 12-bomber cases and in limited draft throughout Texas, Louisiana and select markets along the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Also returning soon is the 20th annual release of Saint Arnold Christmas Ale. Originally introduced into Saint Arnold’s rotation of seasonal brews in 1995, Saint Arnold Christmas Ale is rich and hearty with a malty sweetness from five different types of malted barley and pleasantly spicy bitterness from two different Pacific Northwest hop varieties. As supplies of Saint Arnold Oktoberfest run out, Saint Arnold Christmas Ale will appear on tap, and in 12-ounce bottles sold in six-packs and cases, throughout Texas, Louisiana and select markets in Florida.

More information on Saint Arnold in Florida

After speaking briefly with Saint Arnold Brewing Company owner Brock Wagner, here are a few more details about Saint Arnold’s Florida Launch:

Saint Arnold has modest expansion plans- they sought a state that had a similar craft beer epiphany like their home state of Texas and Florida fit the bill. Florida was a late bloomer in the craft beer revolution, but now it is catching fire. The brewery also sought expansion around the Gulf Coast and felt a kinship with Floridians.

The first Florida-bound truck left the Houston brewery on Tuesday, 5 November 2013. That truck had Elissa IPA, Fancy Lawnmower Kolsch-style ale, and Christmas Ale. After this initial shipment, Florida will keep up with shipments of Saint Arnold’s regular seasonal rotations. Wagner also said that Florida would get very limited shipments of Saint Arnold’s Bishop’s Barrel Series (as there is not a lot of it anyway) in addition to shipments of their Divine Reserve Series, but there is no established time frame for these.

Saint Arnold is beginning distribution down the Gulf Coast with a small shipment going to the Orlando market. Wagner also has his eyes on Jacksonville, just not in the initial shipment.

Finally, while Wagner does not have any plans to collaborate with any Florida breweries on a beer officially, Saint Arnold is going to participate in the Homefront IPA national release in 2014. Saint Arnold plans to participate in Homefront every other year, and in 2012 they helped raise $125,000 for Project Homefront.
