Southern Brewing celebrates International Beer Day with new brews

Press Release:

Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) has brewed three beer styles from countries around the world in celebration of International Beer Day on August 1, 2014.

“Beer styles vary so widely across the world and it’s important for us to recognize how different they are while still all contributing to the craft beer culture,” stated Brew Master Brian Fenstermacher. “A great way for us to celebrate craft beer from different nations is to brew styles from different countries and make sure that we help expose those styles to our local scene. What better day for us to do that than on a holiday dedicated to just that?” The brewery chose to brew an English Mild, an Australian Pale Ale, and an Irish Stout for the event.

This is the first time that Southern has brewed and released an English Mild. Similar to Brown Ales, English Milds are refreshing session beers that are lighter and less hoppy than American Brown Ales.

Australian Pale ale is another style that Southern has not previously attempted to brew. “We thought Australian Pale Ale would be a fun beer to brew for the occasion, because it’s a style rarely seen in the country, let alone Tampa,” stated Fenstermacher. The style is defined by the focus on bittering hops without late hop additions, as well as a more malty profile than an American Pale Ale.

Fenstermacher also chose to bring back the Irish Stout recipe that was brewed for Southern’s St Patrick’s Day Celebration this year. “It was the first beer we’d put on nitro in the taproom,” stated Fenstermacher. “It went over really well, and was a customer favorite, so we are happy to bring it back for International Beer Day.”

The three international styles, brewed on July 11, will be released exclusively in the Southern taproom on Friday, August 1. All three beers will be available by the glass and in growler fills.

Seven Tampa Bay breweries team up for a series of beers released this Saturday

Recently Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) hosted a collaboration brew day in honor of the Bad A** Beerfest put on by Tampa Bay Brewing Company. Tampa Bay Brewing Company (TBBC) teamed up with Southern, Cigar City Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Green Bench, and Big Storm to brew six recipes that will be released at the Bad A** Beerfest on June 28th. All six brews will be on tap together under one tent at the festival.

The actual brewing took place at Southern on Friday, June 6th. Craft beer fans were
invited to come hang out in the Southern biergarten and watch the brewing process. Southern was chosen as the brewday location due to the brewery’s unique small
batch set-up that allows for six batches to be brewed at the same time.

The six collaborations brewed for the festival include:

TBBC and Cigar City Brewpub: Weizenbock
TBBC and Barley Mow: Big IPA
TBBC and Coppertail: Saison
TBBC and Green Bench: Belgian Dubbel
TBBC and Big Storm: Smoked Scotch Ale

For the final brew, TBBC, CCB Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Greenbench, Big
Storm, and Southern all independently chose some malt and hops and threw them
together for a unique and surprising amalgam brew.

Southern was involved with all of brews that day, so one keg of each of the beers
brewed for the festival will also be available on tap in the Southern taproom later
this month.

About Bad A** Beerfest

festival is a celebration of the groundbreaking of the TBBC Westchase location
and will showcase at least 20 local breweries, TBBC food, live music, and other
entertainment. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Wounded Warriors of Tampa

Southern Brewing to release pepper beers on Cinco de Mayo

Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a special beer and mead release party on May 5th. They’ll be tapping six pepper treated beers, a pepper mead, and a Mexican fruit mead.

“We’ve worked with peppers in our brews before, but they were mostly just an accent,” stated brewer Rick Etshman. “This time, the peppers are the main focus of the flavor profile in the beer. It’s been really fun to play with different flavor combinations to create unexpected but delicious beers.”

Etshman drew inspiration for the beers from both traditional pepper flavor palates and new surprising combinations. Each beer was treated in the conditioning tank, instead of adding the peppers during the boiling process, in order to keep a more controlled hand on the exact pepper flavor imparted on the different beers.

Treatments available at the party will include:

– Bungalow Weisse with Jalapeno Peppers, Cilantro, and Lime

– Saison le Chiffre with Brettanomyces L and Guajillo Peppers

– Heights’ Brown with Habanero Peppers

– Kelly’s Wit with Poblano Peppers

– Prohibition Pilsner with Jalapeno Peppers

– Moonraker with Ancho Peppers, Guajillo Peppers, and Cacao Nibs

– Tangerine Mango Habanero Mead

– Guava Pineapple Mead

All treatments will be tapped at 6pm and will be available for growler fills.

The release party will also feature live music from Dean Johanesen in the taproom. Flaming Taco will be on site serving fresh tacos with their special new mango habanero sauce.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration will last from 6-11p on Monday, May 5th.

The event is family and pet friendly. For more information, call Southern at 813-238-7800 or visit their Facebook Page. Southern Brewing is located at 4500 North Nebraska Avenue in Tampa.

Southern Brewing to host art market

Southern Brewing & Winemaking is hosting a Summer Art Market to feature local art, crafts, food, music, and beer.

Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) is hosting its first Summer Art Market on Sunday, May 25, from 12-5p. The market will take place in the Southern biergarten and adjacent lot.

The market will showcase 30 local artists that will have their work available for purchase. Artwork featured at the show includes paintings, jewelry, metal sculptures, baked goods, apparel, home décor, beauty products, photography, dry gardens and more.

Local musicians Fil Pate and 10th Concession will be playing in the biergarten during the event, and local vendors will have a wide variety of food available at the market. Guests will also be able to enjoy a variety of craft beer while browsing through the market.

“To us, a well made craft beer is a work of art, so it makes sense to pair that up with other art mediums,” stated Marketing Manager Cindy Lyons.
Southern is brewing a special event-themed beer that will be released at the market. The company has designed special glassware for the event as well, which will be for sale in the biergarten and will get attendees discounts on draught beers all day.

“I’ve had a vision of doing an event like this since we first moved to this location,” stated Kelly Fenstermacher, owner of Southern. “I’m excited to finally see it come to fruition. I love art, and as a small business owner, it’s important to me to promote other local small businesses whenever possible.”

Southern Brewing to make and growler pyments

Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) will release their first series of pyments on February 27th.

A pyment is a subcategory of melomel a mead made with honey and fruit that specifically uses wine grapes for the fruit addition. Also known as “grape mead” or “honeyed wine,” the beverage is an unexplored style for most beer and wine drinkers in the Tampa Bay area.

“Pyments are a great drink that marry mead and wine, and appeal to lovers of both styles,” stated Marketing Manager Cindy Lyons. “It’s a fun style that hasn’t been brewed in Tampa before, and we’re really excited to introduce it to the scene.”

For the first batch of pyments, Mead Maker Brian Wing used the same grape juices that are available in the wine kits on the retail side at Southern, along with Wildflower and Orange Blossom honey from a nearby Tampa Bay apiary.
“Here at Southern we’re in a unique position where we can easily work directly with suppliers to bring in high quality juice from around the world, and pair it with fresh, local honey,” stated Wing. “And on top of that, everything that we’re doing here can be done at home by homebrewers and winemakers, because all of the supplies used are offered in the shop.”

There will be three styles available at the release party: one red and two white. The red uses Wildflower honey and a full bodied, rich Chilean MalbecShiraz juice that runs a deep reddish purple and shows characteristics of plum and berries with hints of oak and spice. One of the whites combines Orange Blossom honey and a New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc juice for a richer, more fullbodied pyment that highlights gooseberry tones, with hints of leather and tropical fruit. The other white features Orange Blossom honey and South African Johannisberg Dry Riesling juice to showcase a flowery bouquet of flavors, along with tones of complex fruit and hints of cinnamon.

Due to Southern’s unique position of holding both brewing and winemaking licenses, they are one of only two craft breweries in the area that can brew and serve ciders, meads, and wines on site.

Southern will begin serving the pyments on tap at 6p on February 27th, and 32 oz growler fills will be available. Hot Box’d Steamed Cheeseburgers will be onsite serving food from 510p.

Southern Brewing is located at 4500 North Nebraska Avenue in Tampa.

Southern Brewing makes Scotch (Ale) on the Rocks

On Valentine’s Day, Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) is hosting its second speakeasy-themed party in honor of the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. The brewery has created a special new small-batch beer for the occasion that was inspired by the Prohibition. Aptly named Scotch on the Rocks, the Strong Scotch Ale has been treated with Scotch-inspired whisky soaked oak spirals.

To treat the beer, brewers chose a special release Glen Eagles single-malt whisky that was made with 100% Floor Malted Maris Otter, available exclusively through BSG Craftbrewing, the importer of Glen Eagles malt. The bottle is one of only 486 made.

“We chose to feature whisky for this recipe, because it was one of the few alcohols available legally during Prohibition,” stated Marketing Manager Cindy Lyons. “There was a ‘loophole’ that allowed people to get prescriptions from their doctors to drink whisky, and we thought it was a hilariously great tribute to how crafty and persistent liquor and beer enthusiasts have always been in this country.”

The whiskey compliments the peated malt in the scotch wee heavy ale, creating a delightful hint of smokiness and alcoholic warmth. The ale highlights a rich, malty profile with characteristics of dried fruit and caramel. The full body, moderate sweetness, and warm finish make it an excellent beer to sip on in a dark, cozy jazz club.

Scotch on the Rocks will be released at 6p on Valentine’s Day, and will only be available at the back bar with the secret password “bathtub gin.” There are only 15 gallons of the special brew available, and due to the limited nature of the whisky used, the beer will not be brewed again.

About Valentine’s Day Massacre Speakeasy

The Valentine’s Day Massacre Speakeasy is a 1920’s Prohibition themed party hosted at Southern Brewing & Winemaking on February 14th, from 6-11pm. The brewery will be transformed into a speakeasy with swing dancing and live gypsy/vintage jazz from Fil Pate.

Kuba Cigars will be selling cigars in the biergarten, and Roaming Gourmand will be parked on site with a menu of era-inspired food.

Roaring 20’s attire is strongly encouraged. There is no cover, but due to the nature of the event, Southern asks that all guests be 18+.

Southern Brewing is located at 4500 North Nebraska Avenue in the Seminole Heights area of Tampa.
