Orchid Island Brewery begins barrel aging

Orchid Island Brewery of Vero Beach is known for their citrus-forward beers. Ruby Red DIPA, Citron Farmhouse Ale, and Jungle Trail Black IPA all have elements of citrus as well as a relatively high alcohol content. These citrus beers are what has built the brewhouse at Orchid Island, but starting last week, Orchid Island has begun barrel aging their beers, beginning with an imperial stout.

From Orchid Island:

Orchid Island Brewery Imperial Stout + three 50 gallon Angel’s Envy finishing barrels (former ruby Port barrels) + 150 Ugandan, Madagascar or Mexican vanilla beans = Ambrosia… We’ll revisit them in two or three months to see how things are going.

About Orchid Island Brewery

Orchid Island Brewery is a three barrel micro-brewery from Vero Beach, Florida. Great care is put into our recipes to provide a unique twist on trendy styles using local Indian River citrus. We look towards the history of Vero Beach in creating beer recipes. This town was built around the citrus industry and we pay homage to where we come from. Indian River County, and the town Orchid Island more specifically, is widely recognized as a region that grows the world’s finest citrus; similar to Sonoma or Napa Valley being synonymous with high quality grapes.

What makes Orchid Island unique is its proximity to the ocean and the Indian River lagoon. During the worst winter cold fronts, the ocean and river have a warming effect over the island that keeps the fruit just above freezing. The end result is great tasting citrus which contributes to the unique OIB beers.

Orchid Island Brewery is expanding

Orchid Island Brewery, Indian River’s craft brewery, is expanding after only a few months in business. After opening in late August 2014, the small brewery will be moving its tasting room and across the courtyard from their current location at 2855 Ocean Drive. The new tasting room should come online around December, according to an article in local newspaper TC Palm.

The brewery began its business focusing on the Indian River citrus industry and works to put local and indigenous ingredients in every batch of beer head brewer Alden Bing makes. Orchid Island’s mainstay is an India Pale Ale called Star Ruby, named for the fruit that made Indian River famous.

Orchid Island currently distributes to a few spots around town, but Bing says he is having trouble keeping up with demand in his own tasting room. The best place to try Orchid Island beers is the brewery tasting room which is currently open from 5-8pm on Tuesday through Thursday then from 5-10pm on Friday, Saturday offers 12-10pm hours, and Sunday and Monday the tasting room is closed. Look for new hours after the brewery expands.

Orchid Island Brewery is now open

In an announcement months in the making, Orchid Island Brewery of Vero Beach is now open.

The brewery officially posted opening on Facebook this weekend:

So, it begins to flow! We are officially open. A big thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. It has been an incredible journey. Looking forward to some great times. Cheers!

Indian River County, and the town Orchid Island more specifically, is widely recognized as a region that grows the world’s finest citrus; similar to Sonoma or Napa Valley being synonymous with high quality grapes. The geographical makeup of the island makes this possible. During the winter months when citrus is in its peak harvest, cold snaps sweeten the fruit. If the fruit freezes, it also spoils however. Orchid Island Brewing teases pictures of brewing vessels

Orchid Island Brewing of Vero Beach has been working to open their small craft brewery on the Space Coast of Florida for over a year. After issues and delays, the small brewery has posted pictures of brewing vessels and new and improved logos.

Orchid Island Brewing, which poured at the Vero Beach Craft Brew and Wing Fest and the more recent Hunahpu Day, plans “to create a line up that covers the whole citrus spectrum; grapefruit, orange, lemon, and lime. Using local high end citrus as a benchmark for our styles, we hope to enhance our towns incredible history.”

Hopefully these developments are harbingers of an opening day coming soon.
