Cask & Larder debuts Irish Stout today

Press Release:

Fresh after winning medals at last weekend’s Best Florida Beer Competition, Cask & Larder brewers Larry Foor and Garrett Ward will unveil their latest “magically delicious” creation today at 4 p.m.

The Magnus Buchan Dry Stout was brewed in a traditional Irish style and clocks in at 5.5 percent ABV, giving it a little more kick than other well known imports from the Emerald Isle.

The best part though…

Everyone can enjoy the luck of the Irish today, Friday, March 13. The Magnus Buchan Dry Stout will debut for only $3 a pint at happy hour from 4-6 p.m. It will also be available to go in 32-ounce crowlers for $8 each, making it the perfect addition to all of the weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day parties.

Cask & Larder is located at 565 West Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park.

Brandenburger Bock celebrates Bach’s love of beer and music

Press Release:

Johan Sebastian Bach appreciated a good beer. Some might even argue that the 18-century composer had pretty good taste in music, too.

Betsy Gwinn and Alex Tiedtke, of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, recently learned of a 300-year-old letter Bach wrote to a friend proclaiming his love for a barrel of beer he had received as a gift. So, to help celebrate the festival’s 80th anniversary, Gwinn and Tiedtke, approached Cask & Larder head brewers Larry Foor and Garrett Ward to see if they could brew a beer similar to the one with which Bach was so smitten.
The happy result: Brandenburger Bock, a unique and harmonious collaboration that pays homage to the master composer and beer lover.

Cask & Larder will tap the special brew at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. But it gets even better: Members of the Bach Festival Choir will be on hand to serenade the crowd with traditional German beer hall songs. The party is scheduled to last until 6 p.m. and will feature happy hour prices on the special release.

The Brandenburger Bock release party will also feature a special German-themed food menu to pair with the beer. The limited edition beer will be available on tap at Cask & Larder until it runs out and also will be sold in 32-ounce to-go crowlers for $7 per can.

Cask & Larder teams up with the Bach Festival for beer and song

Press Release:

A unique and harmonious collaboration between Cask & Larder and the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park has produced a limited edition beer that pays homage to legendary 18th-century German composer and noted beer lover Johann Sebastian Bach. And it has inspired the acclaimed Bach Festival Choir to add a selection of German beer hall songs to its typically classical repertoire.

The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, the third-oldest Bach society in the United States, observes its 80th anniversary in 2015 with performances scheduled between Feb. 7 and March 1. To commemorate the occasion, Cask & Larder will tap its Brandenburger Bock at the restaurant at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 while members of the Bach Festival Choir serenade the crowd with traditional German beer hall songs. The party is scheduled to last until 6 p.m. and will feature happy hour prices on the special release.

The collaboration came about after Betsy Gwinn and Alex Tiedtke, of the Bach Festival Society, came across a 300-year old letter Johann Sebastian Bach wrote to a friend proclaiming his love for a barrel of beer he had received as a gift. Gwinn and Tiedtke approached Cask & Larder head brewers Larry Foor and Garrett Ward about brewing a beer in a style similar to the one with which Bach was so smitten.

“After first conceptualizing this project with Betsy and Alex and learning more about Bach, Garrett and I dug deeper into the methods of brewing and style of beers in Germany during the 18th century and came up with the Brandenburger Bock, which takes its name from Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos,” said Foor. “When we brewed the beer we tried to be as traditional as possible when it came to the ingredients. We used some German malts and hops and even tried to mimic the water chemistry of Munich. We like to think it’s a ‘Bach’s Bock’.”

Dr. John Sinclair, artistic director and conductor of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, said the event is a good way to spread the influence of Bach beyond the concert hall.

“J.S. Bach enjoyed life enormously and this certainly included his beverages, especially beer,” said Sinclair. “I am excited for the celebration of our 80th festival to extend into new community venues such as Cask & Larder and convey Bach as such a relatable person.”

The Brandenburger Bock release party will also feature a special food menu to pair with the beer. The limited edition beer will be available on tap at Cask & Larder until it runs out and also will be sold in 32-ounce to-go crowlers for $7 per can.

Redlight Redlight to host Zwanze Day 2014

One of Belgium’s most revered brewers of sour and inspired beers, Brasserie Cantillon of Brussels has announced the list of bars that will receive kegs of their once-a-year released Zwanze. Once again, Orlando’s Redlight Redlight has risen to the top of the short list of host establishments for this uber-rare Belgian beer.

Zwanze Day 2014 is September 20th.

About Zwanze: Zwanze is released once a year by Brasserie Cantillon of Brussels, and prior to 2011 the beer was released in numbered bottles. Cantillon owner Jean Van Roy was content to sell his bottles of Zwanze out of the brewery for about 6 euros, but then he logged on to his computer. His jaw dropped when his bottles appeared on eBay, he noticed that the bottle that he worked so hard to make and sell at a reasonable price was selling for 80 euros. Then and there he made a command decision: he would not sell a bottle of Zwanze in the same way again.

From Zwanze Day 2011 onward to today, Brasserie Cantillon selects a handful of bars around the world to pour Zwanze, thus making it an international liquid outreach, instead of a limited bottle sale. Since the brewery would have to select bars, they could exercise control over those who want to sell the beer on eBay. The release of Zwanze has since become an opportunity to meet and enjoy drafts with fellow beer enthusiasts instead of simply a chance to resell a bottle to those who cannot get one.

Fast forward to 2014, and for the third year in a row Brent Hernandez and his crew at Orlando’s Redlight Redlight (2810 Corrine Drive Orlando 32803) will be 1 of over 50 worldwide tappings of Cantillon Zwanze. The only such tapping in Florida, the next closest tapping being in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Cask and Larder to host Monastery to Mouth dinner

Press Release:

While Cask & Larder prides itself on being a leader in the local farm-to-table movement, we must admit we’re pretty giddy about our upcoming “Belgian Beer Dinner,” pairing beers inspired by Belgium’s famed monk brewers with our southern-inspired cuisine. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if this event spawns a new “Monastery-to-Mouth” movement.

Our resident brewmaster, Ron Raike, and a handful of his craft brewery friends are certainly no saints, which prevents them from practicing their craft at Belgium’s monastery brew houses. In our eyes though, they are beer-brewing Gods and well-versed in Belgium’s illustrious brewing history, which dates back to the medieval ages.

In the spirit of friendly competition, Ron and friends will be pitting some of their latest Belgian monastery inspired beers against each other at the July 29 dinner, which will also feature four of our favorite seasonal dishes.

Here are the details:

What: Cask & Larder’s Belgian Beer Dinner
